Advair Diskus (Fluticasone Propionate/Salmeterol)

Advair Diskus is a combination medication containing fluticasone propionate and salmeterol. It is used to control and prevent symptoms (such as wheezing and shortness of breath) caused by asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Fluticasone belongs to a class of drugs known as corticosteroids, which reduce inflammation in the lungs, while salmeterol is a long-acting beta-agonist (LABA) that helps open airways in the lungs.

How to Use:

  • Inhale this medication by mouth usually twice daily (morning and evening), 12 hours apart, or as directed by your doctor.
  • Do not use a spacer with this device, and do not take the device apart.
  • Rinse your mouth with water without swallowing after each use to reduce the risk of infections.

Available Doses:

  • Advair Diskus is available in three dosage strengths:
    • Fluticasone propionate 100 mcg/ Salmeterol 50 mcg per inhalation
    • Fluticasone propionate 250 mcg/ Salmeterol 50 mcg per inhalation
    • Fluticasone propionate 500 mcg/ Salmeterol 50 mcg per inhalation

Side Effects:

  • Common side effects include headache, throat irritation, hoarseness, and cough.
  • More serious side effects include worsening breathing problems, high blood pressure, bone loss, and eye problems.

Precautions:

  • Tell your doctor about any allergies, medical history of bone loss, high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, eye problems, or immune system problems.
  • Advair Diskus does not work immediately and should not be used to relieve sudden asthma attacks.

Interactions:

  • Advair Diskus may interact with other medications such as beta-blockers, diuretics, or MAO inhibitors.
  • Consult your doctor about all the drugs you are taking.

Storage:

  • Store at room temperature away from light, heat, and moisture.
  • Keep the diskus closed when not in use.
